LMS Configuration for Brightspace

This information instructs System administrators in how to configure their LMS to SimCapture Enterprise and SimCapture Exam System which is the first step in using the integration. To learn more about how your data is transferred, see Data Transfer Between Your LMS and SimCapture.
Let's configure the LMS for Brightspace.
Configure Brightspace
To begin, log into your Brightspace instance as a System Administrator and follow these steps:
Access Extensibility Settings
- Click the gear icon in the top-right corner of your screen.
- Select Manage Extensibility.
Register the External Tool
- Click LTI Advantage from the top bar.
- Click Register Tool.
Tool Configuration
Fill out the registration form with the following settings:
Check:
- Standard
- Enabled
Tool Name: Choose a descriptive name like SimCapture Tool.
Domain: Enter the URL you use to access SimCapture. E.g., https://mydomain.simcapture.com
Redirect URLs: https://api.simcapture.com/lti/redirect
OpenID Connect Login URL: https://api.simcapture.com/lti/login
Target Link URI: Enter the URL you use to access SimCapture. E.g., https://mydomain.simcapture.com
Keyset URL: https://api.simcapture.com/lti/jwks
Note: These URLs may vary based on your region. Confirm with your SimCapture representative if you're unsure.
Enable Extensions
Under the Extensions section, enable the following:
- Assignment and Grade Services
- Deep Linking
- Names and Role Provisioning Services
- Platform Notification Service
Role Settings
- Under Roles, check Send Institution Role.
Substitution/Custom Parameters
- No configuration is required here.
Finalize Registration
Click Register. You'll now see the Brightspace Registration Details - keep this information handy, as you'll need it for the next step.
Configure SimCapture
Now that Brightspace is set up, log into your SimCapture organization and complete the following:
- Click the gear icon to go to System Setup.
- Click Learning Management System.
- Determine your Brightspace instance's host URL - this is the URL you normally use to access Brightspace.
- Click Edit and enter the following settings:
- LMS Platform: Other
- LMS URL: https://<BRIGHTSPACE_HOST>
- LMS Issuer: https://<BRIGHTSPACE_HOST>
- LMS LTI OIDC Auth URL: https://<BRIGHTSPACE_HOST>/d2l/lti/authenticate
- LMS OAuth2 Token URL: https://auth.brightspace.com/core/connect/token
- LMS Public JWKS URL: https://<BRIGHTSPACE_HOST>/d2l/.well-known/jwks
- LTI Tool Client ID: Enter the LTI Tool ID you noted from the above section.
- LMS Memberships Request Limit: Leave as the default of (50)
- LMS Course Memberships Request Limit: Leave as the default of (2500)
- External SSO ID Type: Reach out to Support to set up SSO configuration.
- Check the Enable Integration checkbox.
- Click Save.
Create a Deployment for the LTI Tool
Once the tool is registered, you'll need to create a Deployment to make it usable in courses.
Deployment Setup
- Click the gear icon in the top-right corner.
- Select External Learning Tools.
- Click the Registration dropdown and select the tool you just created.
- Click New Deployment.
Deployment Configuration
- Check: Enabled
- Tool: Select the tool you just created.
- Deployment Name: Use a descriptive name like SimCapture Deployment.
Extensions
Ensure the following are checked:
- Assignment and Grade Services
- Deep Linking
- Names and Role Provisioning Services
- Platform Notification Service
- Context Copy Notice
Security Settings
Check the following:
- Org Unit Information
- User Information
- Name
- First Name
- Middle Name
- Last Name
- User ID
- Username
- Org Defined Id
- Link Information
- Title
- Description
- Class list including users not known to this deployment
Configuration Settings
Check the following:
- Open as External Resource
- Grades created by LTI will be included in Final Grade
- Auto Create Grade Items
Substitution/Custom Parameters
- No configuration is required.
Add any Org Units you want to have access to the SimCapture Tool.
Click Create Deployment.
Add the Tool to a Brightspace Course
Now that the tool and deployment are configured, you can add the tool to a course.
Course Integration
- Navigate to the course you want to integrate.
- Select Course Admin.
- Select External Learning Tools.
- Click the dropdown for Filter by Type and check Basic Launch.
- Click New Link.
Link Configuration
- Deployment: Select the deployment you just created
- Link Name: Use a descriptive name like SimCapture Link
- URL: Enter the URL you use to access SimCapture
- Substitution/Custom Parameters: No configuration required
Click Save and Close.
Add SimCapture to Course Content
- Navigate to the Content tab.
- Add a new Module for SimCapture.
- Under the Existing Activities dropdown, select External Learning Tools.
- Select the link you just created.
- Click on the link.
You will be redirected to SimCapture, where you can choose to:
- Link the LMS course to an existing SimCapture course
- Create a new SimCapture course to link with the LMS course
Once linked, user information will begin syncing.
Important Notes
- Course titles are transferred; lessons and smaller components from Brightspace will not appear in SimCapture.
- User data is transferred during initial course linking. Future updates are applied automatically on a nightly basis.
- Courses marked as Completed or Archived will not sync new user information.
