Overview
Screen Recording (Beta) allows the SimCapture Mobile Camera app to stream and record the screen of an iOS or Android device directly into SimCapture Cloud sessions. Instead of capturing video from the device camera, you can share and record the device screen, making it easier to capture applications such as Monitor by Laerdal (TruMonitor) without additional AV hardware.
This feature is designed for simulation environments that require greater mobility, flexible setup, or the ability to capture tablet-based applications as part of a recorded session.
Beta Feature
Screen Recording is currently available as a beta feature and must be enabled upon request. Beta features may have known limitations and are still being refined based on customer feedback.
Benefits
With Screen Recording, you can:
- Capture patient monitor displays directly in SimCapture.
- Record mobile application activity as part of a simulation session.
- Use existing iOS or Android devices instead of dedicated AV hardware.
- Support in-situ, mobile, and non-traditional simulation environments.
- Include monitor activity in session review and debriefing workflows.
Using Screen Recording with Monitor by Laerdal
Screen Recording is particularly useful for capturing Monitor by Laerdal (TruMonitor) displays during simulation sessions.
A dedicated tablet can display the patient monitor while SimCapture records the entire screen as part of the session timeline, making monitor activity available during review and debriefing.
Known Beta Limitations
Permissions Must Be Granted Each Session
- Most mobile devices require screen recording permissions before screen sharing can begin.
- On iOS, screen recording permission must be acknowledged and approved each time a session starts.
- If permissions are denied, the app may become unusable until permissions are updated or the app is reinstalled.
Always confirm screen-sharing permissions before beginning a session.
Avoid Rapid Mode Switching
Quickly switching between Camera mode and Screenshare mode may occasionally create duplicate video feeds.
Workaround: Cancel session setup and start the session again.
Prevent Device Sleep
If the device locks or enters sleep mode during screen sharing:
- The screen-sharing feed stops.
- The recording session may be interrupted.
- A new session may be required.
Recommendation
Disable auto-lock and configure the device to keep the display active throughout the simulation.
Android Support
Android screen sharing is supported, but the beta experience is currently optimized for iOS devices . Additional platform-specific behaviors may occur on Android during the beta period.
Recommended Use Cases
Screen Recording is recommended for:
- Monitor by Laerdal (TruMonitor)
- Tablet-based simulation applications
- Portable simulation environments
- In-situ training events
- Locations without dedicated AV infrastructure
