In-room faculty evaluations allow Course Contributors to be physically present during exams involving Standardized Patients (SPs). This is especially useful for sensitive procedures-such as breast or pelvic exams-where recording is disabled or faculty presence is required for supervision and safety.
Purpose of In-Room Faculty Evaluations
In-room evaluations serve four key functions:
On-the-Spot Evaluation Faculty can provide real-time feedback using an evaluation instrument displayed on the SP's computer. This allows for immediate teaching interventions when necessary.
Ease of Use for Faculty Faculty are assigned to the room like SPs and do not need to log into the system separately. They simply use the SP's interface for evaluation.
Security and Safety Faculty presence adds a layer of protection, reducing the risk of misconduct and ensuring a safer environment for both SPs and students.
Enabling New Activities Faculty evaluations eliminate the need for recording sensitive exams, allowing assessments to proceed while maintaining privacy.
Before You Begin
Here are important setup considerations:
- Faculty must be assigned as Course Contributors in the course containing the scenario.
- The SP's computer will be used by the faculty member for evaluation-SPs will not interact with it during the exam.
- Administrators must define an In-Room Evaluator during room setup in the Control Interface.
- Once assigned, only the faculty member can use the SP interface.
- Other tools (e.g., SP evaluations, Exam EMR) are disabled in-room to preserve interface exclusivity.
- If using rotational scheduling, the system will prompt for an in-room evaluator. Without this assignment, the room setup will be incomplete.
- Only one evaluation type can be active on the SP interface at a time.
Creating an in-room faculty evaluation
Here, we'll look at how to create a Standardized Patient scenario with an in-room faculty evaluation:
- Select your Course.
- Click Add New Scenario.
- Choose Create New, then enter a Scenario Title.
- Select Standardized Patient and complete required fields.
- Toggle the In-Room Evaluation switch.
- Click Save.
If the toggle is disabled:
- Check for an active SP Post-Encounter Evaluation and disable it.
- Check for an active Exam EMR Evaluation and disable it.
Control Interface
The control interface will show three participants:
- SP
- Student
- In-Room Evaluator
The In-Room Evaluator option will be grayed out unless a scenario requiring it is selected.
Room List & Layout
- The In-Room Evaluator appears in both the room list and room layout.
- Use the column selector to toggle visibility of the In-Room Evaluator column.
Rotational Scheduling
When using rotational scheduling:
- The In-Room Evaluator option will appear if the selected scenario requires it.
- You must assign a faculty evaluator to complete the room configuration.
In-room faculty evaluations enhance:
- Real-time feedback
- Security and supervision
- Privacy for sensitive exams
- Faculty engagement without system login
By assigning faculty as in-room evaluators and configuring scenarios accordingly, SimCapture ensures a safe, efficient, and flexible evaluation process.
