This article walks you through how to use SimCapture for Skills to practice clinical skills with a peer using one shared device.
If you want to record yourself independently, see SimCapture for Skills: How to Use the Self‑Record Feature.
Before You Begin
Before starting a peer‑to‑peer practice session, make sure you have:
- A device with a web browser (smartphone, tablet, or computer)
- A stable internet connection
- Access to a course and skill that supports peer practice
- A peer available to observe and evaluate your performance
Peer‑to‑Peer Roles (One Device)
In a one‑device peer session, each learner has a specific role:
| Role | What They Do |
|---|---|
| Learner | Performs the skill being assessed |
| Observer | Uses the device to complete the skills checklist and evaluation |
You will switch roles in separate sessions if both learners need practice credit.
Step 1: Log In
Go to your SimCapture for Skills site:
https://[yourorganization].simcapture.com/skills
Log in using your organization’s credentials.
Step 2: Choose a Skill
From Your Course List:
- Select a skill that supports peer practice (not a self‑record skill)
- Review the Overview and Learning Objectives
Step 3: Start a One‑Device Peer Practice Session
- Select Practice
- Choose Practice with a Peer
- Select your Observer from the dropdown list
- Choose 1 Device as the pairing type
- Select Start
What Happens During the Evaluation
Once the session starts:
- The Observer views the skills checklist
- The Learner performs the skill
- The Observer marks each checklist item as Complete or Incomplete
- When finished, the Observer selects Submit Checklist
Comments and Reflections
Some checklist items may include a comment icon.
- Learners can add reflections when prompted
- Observers may add contextual feedback
Viewing Session Feedback
After the checklist is submitted, the Learner can review detailed feedback for each item:
- Done – Full credit
- Partial Credit – Some points awarded
- Missed – No credit
- Unscored – No point value (for example, free‑text responses)
Select the dropdown arrow next to a question to view item‑level feedback.
Understanding Your Score
Your scoring screen includes:
- Total score
- Date and number of attempts
- Previous high score
- Session duration (timer)
- Score breakdown by category
- Detailed feedback by category
Score Colors
- Green – New high score
- Black – Same as a previous score
- Orange – Lower than a previous score
Question Categories
Checklist questions may be organized into categories (such as QSEN competencies).
Categories help you:
- Identify strengths and areas for improvement
- Track progress over time
- Focus future practice sessions on specific skill areas
This information also helps instructors and administrators evaluate learning outcomes.
What’s Next?
- Practice again to improve your score
- Switch roles so your peer can practice
- Try other session types, including Self‑Record or Two‑Device Peer Practice
