SimCapture Enterprise with the Exam System allows you to integrate Electronic Medical Record (EMR) forms into your exam scenarios. This feature helps learners practice reviewing and documenting patient information in a simulated clinical environment. This guide explains how EMR forms work, how to set them up, and how they appear across different exam states.
What Is the SimCapture EMR Feature?
The EMR feature in SimCapture is designed to simulate the experience of interacting with a patient chart. It allows learners to:
- View patient information in a tabbed interface
- Document findings and interactions electronically
- Practice clinical reasoning and documentation skills
Note: SimCapture’s EMR is not a live EMR system. It does not track real-time patient data and is not intended to replicate full EMR software functionality.
Key Benefits
- Customizable: Create unique EMR forms for each scenario.
- Scalable: Multiple learners can complete the same EMR form simultaneously.
- Integrated: EMRs appear at specific points in the exam flow to support realistic clinical workflows.
EMR Permissions
Action | Who Can Do It |
Create EMR | System Admin, Course Owner, Course Contributor (with Edit Course permission) |
Complete EMR | Learners logged into an exam with EMR enabled |
View Completed EMRs | System Admin, Course Owner, Course Contributor (with View Results permission) |
Edit/Delete Completed EMRs | System Admin, Course Owner, Course Contributor (with Edit Course + View Results permissions) |
Where EMRs Appear in the Exam Flow
Once enabled, EMRs can appear in three exam states:
Pre-Encounter
- Appears on the student workstation
- Shown after the door note and before the encounter
- Learners can review patient history or lab results
Encounter
- Appears on the patient (SP) workstation
- Used by the SP to reference case details during the interaction
Post-Encounter
- Appears again on the student workstation
- Used for documentation or reflection after the encounter
How to Enable EMR in a Scenario
- Navigate to the Scenario you want to edit.
- In the Exam Flow pod, select the edit pencil.
- If no exam flow is selected, choose one (e.g., Standardized Patient).
- On the Exam Flow edit page, check Enable EMR and select Save.
How to Create an EMR Form
- On the Scenario page, go to the Evaluations tab.
- Select Click to add an EMR.
- Choose to:
- Copy an existing EMR from another scenario, or
- Create a new EMR using the default template
- In the EMR Builder:
- Use the Edit button to modify the form
- Switch between Build and Preview modes
- Add or rename tabs (e.g., History, Labs, Notes)
- Add questions or data fields to each tab
Tabs can only be deleted once all questions inside them are removed.
Best Practices
- Use tabs to organize content logically (e.g., “Vitals,” “Lab Results,” “Progress Notes”).
- Keep forms concise to avoid overwhelming learners.
- Align EMR content with the scenario’s learning objectives.
- Test the EMR in all three exam states to ensure proper visibility and functionality.
