What Is a Scoring Rubric?
A scoring rubric is a flexible, manual evaluation tool used to assess another evaluation. It allows graders to assign scores when automatic grading isn’t possible—such as with free-text responses, subjective assessments, or video-based reviews.
Scoring rubrics are ideal for:
- Free-text or narrative responses
- EMR documentation reviews
- Communication and professionalism assessments
- Clinical reasoning evaluations
Important:
- Scoring rubrics are separate from the original evaluation
- They do not directly affect the original score
- They appear independently in reporting and release workflows
Supported Evaluation Types
Scoring rubrics can be applied to the following evaluation types:
- Before Session
- After Session
- Learner / Exam Flow
- Standalone Scenario
- EMR Evaluations
Note: Scoring rubrics are not supported for certain evaluation types such as course-level or reflection evaluations.
How to Create a Scoring Rubric
1. Enable the Rubric
- Go to the Scenario you want to work in.
- Click the pencil icon in the Scenario Content pod
- Check Scoring Rubric under the target evaluation
- Click Save
2. Create the Rubric
- Navigate to the Evaluations pod in your Scenario
- Select Create Scoring Rubric
3. Add Questions
Build your rubric using:
- Multiple choice

Optional Settings
Anonymous Scoring

- Names remain visible in reporting and assignments
Session Video Access
- Available for After Session or Exam Flow evaluations
- Allows scorers to view the recorded session during grading
- Videos are only visible during rubric completion
Assigning Scoring Rubrics
Scoring rubrics are assigned by linking a grader to a course participant.
To assign a scorer:
- Go to the Scoring Rubric Status page
- Select See Scoring Evaluation Assignments
- Assign scorers:
- Individually: Select Click to Assign
- In bulk: Select multiple participants, then choose Assign
You can assign:
- Admins
- Participants (peer grading)
- Self-scoring
Note: Scorers can access the rubric only after the learner completes the original evaluation.
Assignment Statuses
- Waiting for participant: Evaluation not completed
- Assigned: Ready for grading
- In-progress: Grading started
- Complete: Rubric submitted
To reassign a rubric, remove the existing assignment and assign a new scorer.
Completing Scoring Rubrics
- Go to My Courses → View Evals
- Select the assigned evaluation
Interface Layout
- Left: Learner’s original evaluation
- Right: Scoring rubric
- Optional: Session video (if enabled)
Select Submit once grading is complete.
Note: Session videos are only visible during rubric completion and are not accessible afterward unless shared separately.
Reporting and Release
- Rubric scores are reported separately from the original evaluation
- They appear nested under the evaluation
- You can release them independently or alongside the original evaluation
Use tools such as the Inter-Rater Consistency Report to monitor grading reliability.
