Scoring rubrics in SimCapture Enterprise are essential tools for evaluating learner performance—especially when assessments involve free-text responses, subjective judgment, or video review. This guide walks you through what scoring rubrics are, how to create and assign them, and includes real-world examples to help you build effective rubrics.
What Is a Scoring Rubric?
A scoring rubric is a manual evaluation tool used to assess another evaluation. It’s ideal for:
- Free-text or narrative responses
- EMR documentation reviews
- Communication and professionalism assessments
- Clinical reasoning evaluations
Rubrics are available for the following evaluation types:
- Before Session
- After Session
- Learner
- Exam Flow
Note: Scoring rubrics are separate from the original evaluation. They do not directly affect the original score but are included in reports and can be released independently.
How to Create a Scoring Rubric
Enable the Rubric:
- Go to the Scenario Evaluation configuration screen.
- Check the box labeled Scoring Rubric under the evaluation you want to attach it to.
- Select Confirm.
Create the Rubric:
- In the Evaluations pod of your Scenario, select Create Scoring Rubric.
- Add questions using multiple choice, Likert scales, checklists, or free-text fields.
Optional Settings:
- Include session video: Allows graders to view the recorded session while scoring.
- Anonymous scoring: Hides the learner’s identity from the grader (results are still tied to the learner in reports).
Assigning Scoring Rubrics to Graders
Rubrics are assigned by linking a grader to a course participant. This can be done before or after the participant completes the original evaluation.
To Assign a Grader:
- Go to the Scoring Rubric Status page.
- Click See Scoring Evaluation Assignments.
- Assign scorers:
- Individually: Select Click to Assign next to a participant’s name.
- In Bulk: Select multiple participants and select Assign.
Admins and participants can both be assigned as scorers.
Once assigned, the rubric will appear in the scorer’s evaluation list after the learner completes the original evaluation.
Example Scoring Rubrics
Here are a few sample rubrics to help you design your own:
Example 1: EMR Documentation Rubric

Did the learner document the correct diagnosis? | Yes/No | 1 point |
Was the SOAP note complete and accurate? | 5-point Likert scale | 1–5 points |
Comments on documentation quality | Free Text | N/A |
Example 2: Communication Skills Rubric
Question | Type | Scoring |
Maintained appropriate eye contact | Yes/No | 1 point |
Demonstrated empathy and active listening | 3-point scale (Poor, Fair, Excellent) | 1–3 points |
Overall communication effectiveness | 5-point Likert scale | 1–5 points |
Example 3: Clinical Reasoning Rubric
Question | Type | Scoring |
Identified key clinical findings | Checklist | 1 point per item |
Justified differential diagnosis | Free text + 5-point scale | 1–5 points |
Selected appropriate next steps | Multiple choice | 1 point |
Reporting and Score Release
- Rubric scores are reported separately from the original evaluation.
- You can choose to release rubric scores with or without the original evaluation.
- Use the Inter-Rater Consistency Report to monitor grading reliability across scorers.
Best Practices
- Use clear, objective language in rubric questions.
- Train graders to ensure consistency and reduce bias.
- Test your rubric with a small group before full deployment.
- Review rubric results alongside original evaluations for a complete performance picture.
